SEO, GEO and AEO should not be treated as three disconnected tactics. The practical goal is one: build a technically accessible, semantically clear and genuinely useful body of knowledge that search systems, AI interfaces and real people can understand and trust.
- SEO remains the technical and editorial base; GEO and AEO do not replace it.
- Clear entities, evidence, internal relationships and direct answers make content easier to retrieve and cite.
- Authority grows from real expertise, not from publishing generic articles at scale.
- The strongest strategy is designed around the customer’s questions and the business’s evidence, not around acronyms.
SEO is still the infrastructure
Every new label in digital marketing creates the temptation to announce that the previous discipline is dead. I do not work that way. Search engines still need crawlable pages, meaningful titles, internal links, useful content, stable URLs and a website that loads and renders correctly.
If those fundamentals are weak, calling a strategy GEO or AEO will not repair it. I start with the website as an information system: what the company offers, how services relate to one another, what proof exists and what a visitor should understand before taking the next step.
What GEO changes
Generative Engine Optimization is useful as a lens because AI-powered search experiences often synthesize information instead of presenting ten blue links. That makes clarity and evidence more important. A page should make it easy to identify the company, its expertise, its location or market, its services and the statements it can actually support.
There is no reliable button that guarantees citation by an AI system. What we can do is reduce ambiguity, publish original knowledge and create strong relationships between topics, authorship and evidence.
What AEO adds
Answer Engine Optimization pushes us to answer questions explicitly. That does not mean writing robotic FAQ pages. It means respecting the reader’s intent: when someone asks what something costs, how it works, what is included or when it is appropriate, the answer should not be hidden behind ten paragraphs of marketing language.
Direct answers work best when they are surrounded by context. The short answer earns clarity; the deeper explanation earns trust.
The role of brand positioning
Search visibility and brand positioning are increasingly connected. If a company uses five different names for the same service, publishes contradictory descriptions and has no recognizable point of view, systems and people have to guess what it stands for.
A coherent brand creates semantic consistency. The website, cases, articles, profiles and external mentions should reinforce the same territory without sounding mechanically duplicated.
My practical framework
I work from four layers: technical eligibility, information architecture, evidence and distribution. Technical eligibility allows discovery. Architecture organizes the knowledge. Evidence makes claims credible. Distribution creates additional opportunities for that knowledge to be encountered.
The objective is not to impress an algorithm. It is to build a digital asset whose knowledge remains useful even when the interfaces around search change.
Frequently asked questions
Is GEO replacing SEO?
No. GEO is better understood as an extension of search strategy for generative interfaces. Crawlability, quality, structure and authority remain essential.
What is the difference between AEO and FAQ optimization?
AEO is broader. FAQs are one format; the real objective is to make important answers explicit, structured and easy to retrieve across the site.
Can a brand guarantee that ChatGPT or Google AI will cite it?
No. A company can improve clarity, accessibility, evidence and authority, but no legitimate strategy can guarantee inclusion in a third-party AI answer.
Does your brand need to evolve without losing what it has already built?
I review positioning, web architecture, digital property, content and SEO/GEO/AEO opportunities to decide what should be preserved, corrected or rebuilt.
